I have decided that Wanda is the best person to fill our vacant mayor position and, having convinced her, I intend to take a strong position in guiding her campaign. Wanda is a good person, she will work hard and will do well, but I have no doubt she will need my help and guidance to win the office. I am absolutely certain that she will accept my leadership, not only in the campaign, but in carrying out the mayoralty responsibilities afterward.
I’ll still be there with her after we win the election. For sure. That’s the plan.
I stop by the Riverside to see how Cassie’s doing:
“How’s it going this evening?” I ask. “Ready to put some campaign posters in your windows?”
“Of course!” she says. “I’ve already had three customers ask about the election and how they can help you.”
“That’s great,” I say. ”We need to meet with Wanda to get organized … just the three of us for now until we sign on more help. Does tomorrow work? I’ll let Wanda know.”
“That’ll work,” she says. “I’ll have help here … shouldn’t be too busy.”
I tell her that I’ll have a quick glass of Cabernet to settle myself down before I leave. I’m excited to think that together we can make this happen in Middle Valley, both before and after the election. I think Wanda will want, and will certainly need, our involvement.
The Cab hits the spot. It goes down fast and I don’t want another. Time to leave. Cassie is down at the other end of the bar so I give her a wave and head for the door.
The wind is cold on my nose but I can’t keep myself from smiling.
It’s Wanda’s town. It’s Cassie’s town.
And it’s my town – again.
We are on track.
